Hello. I'm Sinead, a certified psychotherapist and hypnotherapist from Ireland.
I relocated to The Netherlands for love ,after graduating from university, and have lived most of my adult life in Amsterdam. In 2024, aged 54, I became an expat all over again when I moved with my second husband to a town close to Malaga in Spain.
Because of my own life experience, I can easily relate to the many challenges faced by expats trying to settle in a new culture. As a result, I have specialised in treating Expats as a psychotherapist in my private practice in Amsterdam for the past 12 years.
I find this work very fulfilling because I love to engage with clients from all over the world, many of whom speak English as their second or even third language. Their problems are as varied as can be, and only a little attention is usually paid to the challenges of living in a new country. Once we dive deeper, it becomes clear that relocating has simply brought to the surface problems that were already simmering down below.
Over the years, I have seen an interesting shift in the themes people bring to my practice to work on.
In the past, depression seemed to be more prevalent , but now anxiety seems to have taken over, at least among my patients.
This may reflect a shift in the culture at large.
I love to learn and hone my skills so I do professional training courses every year in areas that interest me.
As a broadly trained practitioner, I can treat a wide number of problems ,using interventions from different schools of therapy.
But in essence I am a psychodynamic therapist, helping my patients become more familiar with their own emotional landscape. Through therapy they learn to regulate difficult emotions, while revealing the message held within the pain.
My North Star as a therapist is the evidence that it is the therapeutic rapport, the alliance between patient and therapist that is most healing. So I always prioritize that rapport.
