I aim to help my clients become the focus of their lives. This is the significance of 'Essence'. Clients direct the course of their therapy based on their personal goals. I use the person-centered counselling approach in which the client is the centre. The session starts with the client deciding what they would like to discuss during the session. Then, my purpose is to help the client reflect on their emotions and experiences, gain greater self-awareness and arrive to their own conclusions. I follow the BACP ethics under which I am trained (https://www.bacp.co.uk/events-and-resources/ethics-and-standards/ethical-framework-for-the-counselling-professions/). Together with the client, we form a contract in which we agree on the course of the therapy and the ethics mentioned above. This is usually done during the first 2 sessions. In private practice, the standard is to offer 20 sessions in the Netherlands. Of course, if a client wishes to continue that can be agreed between counsellor-client.
I often focus on childhood experiences with my clients. I consider the transactional analysis, and the life scripts that each person follows in their life. Hence, I focus on how such scripts can affect the course of one's life. How would a person get out of them? How would someone suddenly stop believing what he/she was told from a young age?. How would a person arrive to self-actualisation; leaving the image of who he was told to be and truly becoming who he wants to be?. The therapy session is different with children, such techniques will be adapted depending on the goals that the client will set on therapy. For clients with autism and ADHD traits, I often use diverse CBT techniques as tools alongside the person-centered approach. I also provide Consultancy sessions for parents that have children in the spectrum, where I intend to raise the awareness around the autism / adhd spectrum and the daily difficulties that parents face with their children.
