About me

I am a Canadian therapist and EMDR specialist (EMDRIA-certified therapist and consultant) with over 15 years of clinical experience in a diverse range of settings and cultural contexts. In 2018, I established an online private practice in Bonn, Germany, and have since (in 2021) relocated to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from where I continue to offer services online. I work with a highly diverse client base and a breadth of mental health issues related to trauma, adjustment, work-related stress, acute anxiety, sexual violence and interpersonal issues. I use evidence-based trauma treatment modalities to address the cumulative toll that stress, trauma and adjustment can have on all areas of wellbeing, with the aim of increasing resilience, fulfillment and satisfaction. Respect, compassion and collaboration are at the core of my practice. I fully respect the autonomy of my clients, and I view each client as the expert on their own life.

I have extensive experience supporting expatriates. As a mother, therapist, and expat, I know first-hand the psychological and emotional challenges that come with adjusting to new environments and the strain this can have on individuals, their relationships, and family dynamics. My experiences as a trauma trainer and advisor in conflict-affected countries – such as Iraqi Kurdistan and Afghanistan – have also led me to specialize in vicarious traumatization and burnout, with a specific interest in those working in humanitarian settings.

Outside of private practice, I have worked as the mental health clinician at an international medical clinic in Hanoi, Vietnam, and began my career in northern Canada working with Indigenous individuals affected by sexual abuse and complex generational trauma. I received training and mentorship on Indigenous psychotherapy and traditional healing practices. These teachings continue to shape my approach to trauma recovery and intercultural work.

I am also a passionate EMDR and trauma consultant, an international trainer, and a published author.

Approach

Treatment Approaches
Body therapyRecommended for those who want to connect their mind and body to release stress or trauma through physical sensations and movement.
EMDRRecommended for those dealing with trauma who want to process painful memories in a structured way to reduce their emotional impact.
IFS: Internal family systemsRecommended for those who want to explore and heal the different parts of themselves that might feel conflicted or overwhelmed.

I provide trauma-informed, culturally responsive counselling to individuals affected by a broad range of adverse experiences (past, present or ongoing) as well as those experiencing stress and anxiety, grief and loss, challenging life transitions, and relational issues.

I am a certified Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist and consultant, and a Certified Trauma Treatment Professional for PTSD and complex trauma (CTTP-II). I am trained in other evidence-based trauma treatment modalities such as Flash, Progressive Counting, and IPT. I am also trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS Level 2) and have experience with attachment and early childhood trauma, dissociation and parts work. As a Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator (TCTSY-F), I integrate somatic and body-based approaches into trauma treatment.

I employ Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and Non-Violent Communication Skills to increase self-awareness, build emotional regulation skills, and strengthen communication and interpersonal skills as part of stabilization and recovery. In work with teens, I integrate the creative arts therapies to increase engagement, self-reflection and healthy emotional expression.
