About me

I grew up bicultural and bilungual (German/Swabian and Anglo Canadian). My parents are both immigrants in Canada (father from New Zealand, mother from Germany). Now I'm an immigrant in Germany. I know first-hand that it takes courage to make change in one's life. I have worked in large organizations (prisons, hospitals, a university), as well as multi-practitioner clinics. I have conducted individual and group psychotherapy, supervised doctoral students' clinical work (and their doctoral research), taught doctoral courses in clinical psychology, and provided consultation and training for mental health professionals. In Canada, I have conducted numerous medical legal assessments (e.g., psychodiagnostic, personal injury, violence risk, sexual violence risk, etc.).

Approach

Treatment Approaches
Clinical psychologyRecommended for those who need help with diagnosing and treating more complex mental health issues, often involving assessments and evidence-based treatments.
DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy Recommended for those who want to learn skills to manage intense emotions and improve their relationships, especially if they feel easily overwhelmed.
Psychodynamic therapyRecommended for those looking to explore their emotions deeply and understand how past experiences shape their present life.
I am trained both in psychodynamic therapy and DBT. Psychodynamic therapy involves discovering and working with hidden patterns on our lives; it is quite unstructured. DBT is a skills-focused treatment, mostly targeting behaviour problems, and often structured. I find the space between these approaches is where most peoples' problems lie, and I prefer to work in this space (i.e., not all psychodynamic, not all DBT). My work with clients also leans heavily on attachment theory and interpersonal neurobiology (big words for human connection). We know the alliance between practitioner and client is the most important contributor in positive therapy outcome. I don't believe in being a "blank slate;" if you ask me a question about me, I'll probably answer it.
