I offer a very safe, non-judgmental relationship where you can face crises and explore yourself.
Hello!
Who am I? Hard question, but:
I’m an American expat living in Schöneberg, Berlin. I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the International Psychoanalytic University, as well as a Master’s in Neuroscience from Humboldt University. I am in the middle of the German state training for Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, which is around a 5 years-long process.
What inspired me to pursue a career in mental health is the profound, emotional experience of the therapeutic relationship. With time, my clients and I try to build a unique connection where, when everything goes well, we are both impacted and changed by the conversations we have together.
For the nerds out there, I am an existentialist and a humanist! This means that my theoretical focus and personal belief system surrounds the idea that people are basically good. Everyone does the best they can with the resources they have in the moment. When we are met with the feeling of being seen and understood, we have all the resources we need to heal ourselves (or at least 85%).
As an American in Berlin, I understand—although it may be a cliché—that this city is rough. Berlin offers a world of freedoms and possibilities, but it can also feel overwhelming and bitter at times. It’s completely natural to question aspects of your identity in such a vibrant and diverse place. I can never forget the near-daily struggle over the 5 years it took me to learn German (nach endlich Deutsch zu sprechen!). These things are hard, and they provoke a lot of anxiety. Solving these anxieties with the right support can be a turning point in life and can strengthen the trust one has in themselves and hopefully in others too.
In addition to offering sessions through It's Complicated, I work part-time at the Health and Medical University in Potsdam, where I work as a researcher and lecturer in the Clinical Psychology department.
In our first session, our main focus will be to establish a connection and see if we are a good fit for working together. I’ll ask you about what’s going on in your life, and together we’ll expand your understanding of your situation. We’ll also discuss your goals for therapy and explore how we might work together to achieve them. While it’s important to have direction and clarity from the start, I also believe that therapy is an evolving process, and it’s perfectly fine to allow space for things to unfold naturally.
Sometimes, when you’re feeling “off,” it can be difficult to understand exactly why. Swirling thoughts, overwhelming emotions, and inner confusion can leave you feeling disconnected. It can even feel like you’re losing touch with your sense of reality. My approach is to create a safe, supportive space where you can explore yourself openly and without judgment. Therapy, at its best, is a place where one can feel even terribly uncomfortable feelings and put into words, maybe for the first time, these complicated inner experiences.
I work from a modern psychodynamic perspective, which means I believe much of our behavior is shaped by internal forces—forces that may not always be obvious, especially during times of stress. There are the problems that one can put into words, and then the difficulties that one cannot necessarily put their finger on. In relationships, for example, we can often find ourselves repeating… something. These patterns can be difficult to break without awareness, and that’s where the therapeutic relationship becomes so powerful. The dynamic between us is key to the work we’ll do together, and I invite you to share openly about your feelings toward me, the therapy process, and anything else that arises. This openness allows us to explore and observe what’s really going on.
One should expect a long-term process and be committed to weekly, in-person sessions. Online sessions are possible, but should only be an exception in extenuating circumstances to mostly in-person work. If you are interested in working with me, I offer a first one-hour session for 15 euros.
