I am here to support adults, expats and couples in overcoming both acute and structural mental struggles that have to do with adaptation to change, attachment, self-concept and identity, social interaction or anxiety.
I am an expat myself: I was born and raised in Amsterdam and have enjoyed living in Berlin since the late 90s. Alongside psychology, I have a professional background in music, crafts, and as a visual artist. From my personal background I naturally empathise with lgtbq+ as well as non-lgbtq+ perspectives on life.
I value connection and appreciation, and I strive to create an authentic and trusting relationship where we’re on equal footing. And I believe, we can change our feelings if we learn to first accept and get to know them.
In addition to my therapy practice, I work as mediator and serve on the board of the Mediation Center Berlin. And I am a counselor at the Association of Binational Partnerships in Berlin, counseling couples from mixed cultural backgrounds.
My approach is based on the principles of humanistic psychology and is characterized by positive regard, empathy, curiosity and authenticity. I create a safe and supportive space in which you can open up and develop at your own pace. It is my aim to help you learn to listen to yourself – both to hear your words and experience your body. This will enable you to get to know yourself better and sense any blockages that may be standing in your way. We will look at how you would like to deal with these in a way that suits you. This will enable you to shape your life independently and respond to life's challenges with personal responsibility.
Together, we work to strengthen your self-confidence, facilitate authentic relationships and develop your ability to assert yourself in difficult situations in the future. In short, we explore and realize significant and positive changes in your life.
This approach is helpful if you are struggling with:
I offer reduced rates for those on a low income. We can speak both German and English, my mother tongue is Dutch. I also offer appointments in the evenings and at weekends. Come see me in my office in Berlin or online . I am looking forward to meeting you!
In couples counseling I also have a focus on the challenges in bi-national partnerships. Differences in language, (family)culture, and social expectations can easily lead to misunderstandings or pressure to adapt. Language differences can also become a source of strain — especially when you or your partner have to communicate in a language that isn’t your mother tongue, making it difficult to express subtle nuances, humor, or certain emotions. These challenges may be intensified by external factors such as residence or visa issues, financial dependencies, or unequal career opportunities or privileges, which can affect the balance in the relationship. I can support both of you in reflecting on these issues, enabling mutual understanding, and finding a way of living and growing together that suits both of you.
