I am a Lacanian psychoanalyst offering online sessions in English and Spanish. I accept clients from all over who are interested in working online.
I am Alicia Barrena (Ph. D.) a Lacanian psychoanalyst and theorist.
Born and raised in Mexico, I lived and completed my university and (first) Master's degree in the United States. I then went on to complete my doctorate at The European Graduate School in Switzerland. I studied under famed Slovenian psychoanalytic philosophers, Slavoj Žižek, Mladen Dolar and Alenka Zupančič, the latter of whom supervised my dissertation.
In 2022 I became a License Qualifying Candidate at New York City's National Psychological Association of Psychoanalysis, which I attended for three years, and in 2025 I became affiliated with the clinical institute The Center for Lacanian Analysis in Auckland, New Zealand, of which I am currently member. Furthermore, in order to fully round out my psychoanalytic formation, I will begin the Master's in Psychoanalysis program, established by Jacques Lacan himself, at Paris 8 in the fall of 2026.
My clinic is founded on the premise of free association. I work to create a space for you in which you will arrive at associations that will lead to the discovery of the conditions of your dis-ease. My practice consists of analyzing the cause and conditions of symptoms in order to transform them. Through this process, an analysand uncovers (or, discovers) their subjective position in the midst of what is oftentimes experienced as unbearable suffering. It is this very suffering that a treatment aims to lessen through the process of an analytic intervention. Through this process you will come to a greater understanding of yourself and discover the forces that shape your psyche.
Though I am educated in many psychoanalytic modalities, the approach I insist on is Lacanian. This is because the Lacanian theoretical system has the most thoroughly elaborated structural description of the conditions for the development of the human psyche, and therefore, the most efficacious diagnostic and treatment models.
This clinic will be good for those with anxiety, stress, depression, suicidal ideation, a sense of helplesness, PTSD, have a history of sexual abuse, have intrusive thoughts, who have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder or who have symptoms (physiological or psychological) which have gone unable to be diagnosed.
Every hour of my clinic is supervised.
