I believe that we are all on a journey in life and sometimes we carry baggage that obscures our view and takes us far off course. At certain time points we may feel the heaviness of the load more severely, for example, when we forget where we were headed or when we hit a road block on the way to our destination, individually, as a family or as a couple. Your goal may be to reshuffle the load in the here and now so you can get back on track (e.g. relieve current symptoms, problems, stuckness) or your goal may be to stop and sort through the baggage to let go, transform or integrate pieces to make them work for you longterm. You might also want to halt to gain new perspectives to look back at what you left behind and also look forward to the new paths opened up in front of you (e.g. explore the impact of early experiences on current functioning and making new meaning in line with your values and beliefs to mindfully focus or change your next steps in life). I will meet you where you are at at the beginning and will check in with you throughout to adjust to your process and tempo.
I have trained in multiple modalities (CBT, ACT, Schema, Systems/Family Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Mindfulness, Existential techniques and other.) and use an integrative approach as I believe that every individual, couple or family has a unique story and distinct needs. That is why it is important to me to work collaboratively with you in the first session to understand the current impacts and history of the problem as well as your personal goals for therapy. Before any modality, I believe the counsellor-client relationship is the most important. I will strive to help you draw from our sessions to integrate learnings and insights into your personal life so you can live an independent and meaningful life. As such I believe that the length of counselling should be decided early to help you through the process and associated concerns that often arise when we face change and transition.
