I generally use the perspective of the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to understand human suffering. In this regard it is important for me to clearly see and model the issues and aversities my patient faces through the lenses of their own universe of meanings, because there is no other way - I posit - to understand and make my patient feel truly understood.
Therapy, in my view, should help the patient to be the person they want to be while facing adversity. That requires in a very Acceptance and Commitment Therapy way, to go towards what in their hearts is important, is precious, rather than run away from what they do not want.
One way through which I achieve these goals is to promote the mind's flexibility to believe strong and useful mental images, that enhance performance, and step back, distance and disbelief those images that, instead, are an obstacle to my patient's values and life goals.
