About me

I am Yuri Amado, a psychoanalyst, also a physician and a psychologist by formation. I began my studies in 2002 in the Psychology program at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, where I would later also earn a Master's degree and a degree in Medicine. From the beginning, it was clear to me that the clinical tools I wished to possess and offer my patients would only be attainable through Psychoanalysis.

This led me to undertake my training at Maiêutica Florianópolis, a psychoanalytic institution of which I was a member for a decade. Through subsequent experiences working in philanthropic institutions, drug addiction treatment centers, and lecturing to both professionals and the general public, I have uninterruptedly maintained my work in private practice.
This is the one place where Psychoanalysis can truly unfold, allowing so many magnificent subjects, previously hidden beneath the discontent of their own repression, to emerge.

Approach

Treatment Approaches
Lacanian PsychoanalysisRecommended for those who want to explore the unconscious mind through the lens of language and desire, focusing on understanding deeper motivations.
PsychoanalysisRecommended for those who want to explore how their unconscious mind and early experiences affect their current behaviors and feelings.
My therapeutic approach is grounded in a deep conviction in psychoanalysis, as developed in the tradition of Sigmund Freud and the rigorous re-reading by Jacques Lacan. With 18 years of clinical practice, my work is based on the principle that to truly address suffering, we must look beyond surface-level symptoms and diagnostic categories. While these can sometimes be useful for communication, they run the risk of obscuring the singular truth of each subject's experience.

While my dual background as a physician and psychologist provides a comprehensive understanding of human health, my method in the consulting room is distinctly psychoanalytic. This means we do not operate with pre-defined protocols or with the goal of a quick behavioral adjustment. Psychoanalysis is an invitation to a different kind of work: a courageous exploration of the unconscious. In psychoanalysis, the unconscious is not merely a repository for forgotten memories, but an active, dynamic force that manifests in our actions, dreams, slips of the tongue, and, crucially, in our symptoms.

The process unfolds through speech. The analytic setting is simple yet powerful: you are invited to speak as freely as possible—what is known as "free association"—about whatever comes to mind, without censorship or concern for coherence. On my part, I practice an "evenly suspended attention," a way of listening that does not cling to manifest meaning but is attuned to the repetitions, ruptures, and resonances in your discourse. It is in the very texture of your speech that we can glimpse the logic of your desire and the roots of your suffering.

In this space, the therapeutic relationship (the transference) becomes a vital field of work. This is not a relationship of friendship or advice, but a place where one's core relational patterns and fundamental fantasies can be re-enacted and, most importantly, analyzed. My role is not that of a master who holds the answers, but of a partner who sustains a space for your own truth to emerge.

The ultimate goal transcends the mere elimination of a symptom. A symptom is often an encoded message, a "compromise formation" that the subject has found to deal with an unbearable conflict. To work beyond it means to decipher this message and construct a more authentic and less costly way forward. It is a journey that aims to allow the subject to emerge from beneath the weight of repression and discontent. It is a path toward assuming your own desire and taking responsibility for it, achieving a lasting and meaningful freedom and change.

Experience

Private Psychoanalytic Practice | Florianópolis, SC | 2006 – Present

My primary focus for nearly two decades has been my private psychoanalytic practice. This confidential setting is dedicated to the deep, long-term engagement that psychoanalysis requires, welcoming individuals ready to explore the roots of their suffering. This practice remains the cornerstone of my professional work.

Diverse Clinical & Professional Experience

My work is also informed by extensive experience beyond my private practice. This includes clinical roles in addiction treatment centers and philanthropic community institutions. Additionally, I am an experienced lecturer, presenting on psychoanalytic topics to both professional peers and the general public, aiming to make the insights of this field more accessible.

Education

My clinical approach is deeply informed by extensive and dedicated training in psychoanalysis. My foundational training in this field was a decade-long engagement with Maiêutica Florianópolis, a distinguished psychoanalytic institution where I was an active member, dedicating myself to the rigorous study and practice of Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis.

My academic background is interdisciplinary, providing me with a broad perspective on human health. I hold a Master's degree in Psychology from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), where my research contributed to a deeper understanding of the human psyche.

In addition to my postgraduate studies, I earned a full degree in Medicine, also from the UFSC. This medical training gives me a solid grounding in the biological and physiological aspects of human life.

My journey in the field began in 2002, when I started my studies for my first degree in Psychology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), establishing the foundation upon which my subsequent medical and psychoanalytic training was built. This combination of qualifications allows me to approach my work with a uniquely integrated perspective.
