My strength is recognising and putting into conscious words what lies deep and feels heavy or tangled — and creating a safe space, along with offering practical tools, so that growth can emerge from it.

About me

Before studying psychology, I spent several years in helping, medical professions — searching for my true calling — including caring for the elderly and sick, as well as working as a medical assistant in a surgical trauma unit. On my own path toward better health, I lived vegan for 9 years and learned a great deal about nutrition working in a health food store back in the 90s.

Through contact with countless patients, something became clear to me that would shape the rest of my career: the root cause of health and happiness doesn't lie in the body alone. So in 1998, I began studying psychology at the University of Saarbrücken, graduating with a diploma in 2005.

Born myself into an unhappy family, in which the whole program of domestic violence, addiction, helplessness, and lovelessness played out, I searched everywhere for the answer to one question: What is actually going on here?

In 1994, I had the good fortune to encounter Buddhist teachings — in a tradition that doesn't brush off any question, but instead hands you real answers and methods. For 2,600 years, the core of the Buddhist teachings has been working with one's own mind in a way that leads to happiness and freedom from suffering. After 32 years of meditation practice, I can confirm:

  1. Suffering exists.
  2. There is a way out of suffering.
  3. The body can support the mind.
  4. The most effective and powerful lever for eliminating suffering is working on the level of the mind.

Mind is boss!

in 2012 I obtained my license to practice psychotherapy (Heilpraktikerin für Psychotherapie) and opened my own private practice in Berlin, working with individuals and couples. During this time, drawing on years of engagement with the theme of "powerful femininity," I developed my own approach: working with the female psyche with the psychological powers that are rooted in the menstrual cycle. Read more about this on my website: marijanabatan.com

I speak German, English, and Croatian fluently, workable Czech and French, and I've recently started learning Greek. I also understand the language of astrology and use it, in the tradition of Stephen Arroyo, to grasp psychological, inner dynamics rather than for prediction. "Serious psychologists don't do astrology," was the common wisdom for a long time, and I kept this ability of mine very much under wraps. But it can't be helped — I simply do understand "astrologian"; it already showed itself at the age of six. Today, I let my clients choose whether they want to use this tool. With a glance at someone's data, I can grasp a great deal about a person in a very short time. And time, after all, is also money. We might not understand fully how it works, but there are many things between here and the end of the universe that we don't understand. Yet.

When I'm not in session, I write articles on psychological topics, am currently working on a book on the theme "The Psyche of Woman Within the Female Cycle," and spend time with friends and family in Bohemia, Croatia, and Greece.

Fun fact: since 2020, I've lived completely free of any psychoactive substances (one daily coffee is my one indulgence). This choice grew out of a deep wish to be fully "mistress of my own house" on a psychological level. Learning to steer your own body's chemistry through your own strength is a genuinely fascinating undertaking. So I have many years of experience carrying — and enjoying — a sober life. It's not always easy, but it's absolutely possible ;)

Approach

Treatment Approaches
Menstrual coachingRecommended for those who want to better understand their menstrual cycle and learn how to manage their emotions and energy throughout the month.
Solution-focused therapyRecommended for those who want quick, practical solutions to their problems without focusing too much time on the past.
Systemic approachRecommended for those who want to look at how different systems—like family, work, or society—affect their behavior and relationships.
  • I see body and mind as one, not as separate systems. It's much harder to reach mental wellbeing when the body is unwell — it helps to work from both sides at once: the body supports psychological wellbeing, and vice versa.
  • The way I teach a women about the psychological powers that lie in the female cycle is an approach I developed myself — not as a cure-all, but as an entry point and a practical tool for harnessing these forces to shape one's life. More on this on my website marijanabatan.com.
  • At the heart of my psychological work is the Buddhist view. I've been continuously learning and practicing meditation for over 30 years, which has taught me a great deal about how the human mind actually works — and that flows directly into my work.
  • My goal: building a stable, sustainable personality.
My credo — "as fast as possible, as sustainable as possible" — stands for practical, goal-oriented work that explores deep-seated patterns while integrating very concrete shifts and changes. To that end, I also work with micro-habits (a cognitive-behavioral method), which have proven especially stabilizing and easy to apply in daily life.
  • The HERO-approach
I particularly enjoy working with people carrying multiple burdens at once — people who are aiming for something big, people who chose to carry responsibility for others - while life confronts them with obstacles and crises. Reach for the stars. We often don't know what we're made of until we're truly put to the test.
  • Mental health is, in my view, the highest good. The mind alone has the capacity to experience joy and happiness. A well-functioning, healthy body is a nice-to-have (almost nobody has it!), but without a sane mind life is very difficult to enjoy. Therefore strengthening mental stability while avoiding harm guides me to exercise the utmost care in choosing my methods — this is my top priority.
  • You need to appear as sober and in your best possible shape to the sessions (eat, drink, rest before, no intake of drugs or alcohol). That way we can work most effectively and time is not wasted on avoidable distraction. I use language very deliberately and consciously to make you learn useful new stuff and unlearn the things that do not support you anymore. For this end we must understand each other well. Where you are really awake and aware, the "magic" happens.

Creating mentally strong and stable people is my calling.
Expect that you will also laugh sometimes with me about the most difficult things - and in spite of all.
