It’s Complicated grows to over 2,500 verified therapists across Europe

Within just six months, Berlin based mental health platform It’s Complicated has increased the number of therapists, coaches and psychological counselors by 32 percent. More than 2,500 professionals are now registered across Europe, with over half of them based in Germany – making It’s Complicated one of the largest international therapist networks headquartered in the DACH region.

Berlin, June 2025. ‘This growth demonstrates the clear need for a more socially responsible, accessible, and professional mental health platform that treats its therapists fairly‘, says Jakob Lusensky, psychoanalyst, co-founder, and CEO of It’s Complicated. ‘Our goal is to create a sustainable infrastructure that empowers both therapists and clients.‘

It’s Complicated is expanding its European network of therapists entirely organically through personal recommendations, local community events and increased visibility in search engines. This growth is driven by the platform’s mission: to improve access to psychological support while consistently putting the needs of both clients and therapists at the centre.

Founded by therapists in 2019, It’s Complicated follows a community-based approach designed to support professionals in setting up their own private practices – with full autonomy over fee structures and a focus on delivering high-quality care.

Diverse expertise for tailored support

The pool of professionals on It’s Complicated reflects a broad spectrum of qualifications and therapeutic approaches. Around 20 percent are licensed psychotherapists, approximately 40 percent are psychologists or psychological counselors, about 25 percent are therapeutic counselors, and roughly 15 percent are certified coaches. This diverse composition ensures that people can find support tailored to their individual needs and preferences.

All therapists on the platform undergo a comprehensive qualification screening prior to registration. The standard requirement is a completed master's degree in psychology, counselling, or an equivalent therapeutic training of similar length and depth. Additionally, applicants must provide proof of at least two years of advanced, practice-oriented training in an applied psychological field such as counselling, psychotherapy, or coaching. This ensures that all therapists on the platform meet a high standard of professional qualification.

‘Our platform embodies professional quality and methodical diversity in therapeutic practice. We want to offer qualified professionals from different psychological schools and methods a safe, professional framework and at the same time give people access to appropriate support, even beyond the limited modalities currently covered by health insurance,’ says Johanne Schwensen, co-founder and Chief Clinical Officer of It’s Complicated.

Current reach and future goals

Germany is currently It’s Complicated's most important market, with high demand from both therapists and therapy seekers. Other important markets are the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the DACH region. A high regional concentration of therapists can also be found in cities that are popular with expats, such as Barcelona or Lisbon.

In the coming months It's Complicated plans to expand its reach to additional European countries and the local city networks, making it even easier for people across Europe to access qualified mental health professionals.
