My name is Stavroula, I am from Agrinio and currently live in Athens. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by understanding people—their emotions, behaviors, and thought processes. My decision to become a psychologist stemmed from a deep desire to support individuals facing challenges and provide meaningful guidance in their journey toward well-being.
I pursued my studies at the Psychology Department of Panteion University of Athens, gaining a solid foundation in psychological theory and practice. Following my graduation, I immediately began training in the systemic approach, further deepening my expertise in psychotherapy. At the same time, I enrolled in the postgraduate program "Strategies for Developmental and Adolescent Health" at the Medical School, which I am currently completing.
My training includes certification in WISC-V and WAIS-IV psychometric tools, as well as a nine-month Special Education seminar at the University of Patras. I have actively engaged in numerous seminars and conferences, continuously expanding my knowledge and skills in mental health assessment and intervention. Additionally, I participate in personal psychotherapy and supervision, ensuring my ongoing professional development.
Since September 2024, I have been working at a psychotherapy and specialized therapy center, conducting individual and group psychotherapy sessions for children, adolescents, and adults, along with parental counseling. The cases I work with include:
Children diagnosed with ADHD, autism, emotional regulation difficulties (anger outbursts, anxiety, frustration), low self-esteem, and school bullying.
Adolescents dealing with low self-esteem, anxiety, anger, issues related to gender identity, sexual orientation, eating disorders, body image concerns, and other psychological challenges.
Adults seeking support for anxiety, depression, panic attacks, difficulties in coping with life transitions, and other mental health concerns.
Upon completing my studies, I volunteered at a psychotherapy center, where I observed diverse cases under the supervision of an experienced psychologist. As part of my undergraduate studies in 2021-2022, I completed an internship at Athens Health, a municipal center for addiction prevention and psychosocial health promotion. There, I attended individual therapy sessions, counseling sessions, and parent groups in schools while also contributing to health education programs at the 7th Unified Lyceum of Athens. I remained engaged in this setting for an additional three months as a volunteer.
Through my postgraduate internship, I gained valuable experience in various clinical settings:
Naval Hospital of Piraeus – Observing pediatric assessments and parental counseling.
Panagiotis & Aglaia Kyriakou Children's Hospital – Participating in parental counseling sessions, pediatric evaluations, and training in psychological assessment tools such as the SDQ questionnaire.
414 Military Hospital of Special Diseases – Working in the psychiatric clinic, contributing to diagnostic evaluations of patients and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team.
Currently, I am interning at the Thalpos Day Center for Children and Adolescents, where I work alongside a child psychiatrist, participating in therapy sessions for children and adolescents, parental counseling, and receiving advanced training in therapeutic techniques and standardized assessments.
Additionally, I volunteer for the psychological support helpline "Mila Mou". Previously, I worked at the Saint Nicholas Hostel of AMKE IASIS, conducting individual and group therapy sessions for individuals facing mental health challenges, facilitating outdoor activities, and engaging in supervisory teams.
I am passionate about offering a safe and supportive environment for my clients, helping them navigate challenges, strengthen their mental well-being, and develop effective coping strategies. Through my education, clinical training, and personal psychotherapy, I strive to continually refine my skills and evolve as a professional, ensuring that I provide the best possible care to those who seek my support.
I apply a systemic approach, emphasizing the interaction between individuals and their environment. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, valued, and empowered. In systemic therapy, the therapeutic relationship is built on mutual respect, collaboration, and exploration. The therapist adopts a stance of curiosity, striving to understand the client's reality rather than imposing interpretations. This approach prioritizes the client’s strengths and resources, rather than focusing solely on challenges.
One of the fundamental principles of systemic psychotherapy is that individuals develop symptoms such as anxiety when they ignore their needs or suppress emotions. Anxiety often acts as a warning signal, urging clients to listen to themselves more closely. Behavioral patterns are particularly insightful in systemic therapy, as they reveal how individuals interact across all their relationships. Metaphors and imagery are considered valuable therapeutic tools, helping clients gain a deeper understanding of their experiences.
Throughout therapy, I integrate various techniques tailored to the client’s needs, including circular questions that explore how others perceive the client’s behaviors, encouraging deeper self-awareness (e.g., “What do you think your sister feels about this situation?”). Externalization separates the problem from the client’s personal identity, helping them gain new perspectives, while reframing—perhaps the most crucial intervention—gives events a different meaning by placing them in a new context that alters their significance. Other techniques include classification & scaling questions, which help clients organize their perceptions (e.g., “Who is most excited about your sister’s move?”), and reality & possibility-construction questions, which assist clients in exploring alternative narratives and solutions.
Additionally, I consider exceptions crucial in therapy, asking questions such as “Were there moments when you didn’t experience this difficulty?” to highlight strengths and previous coping strategies. The therapeutic relationship itself is central to the process, as it significantly influences the effectiveness of therapy.
Therapy must be personalized to align with each client’s unique needs. When necessary, I incorporate cognitive techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation to reduce physical tension, diaphragmatic breathing for emotion regulation, distraction techniques to redirect focus, and journaling, where clients record thoughts and emotions triggered by life events to enhance self-awareness. Additionally, I may administer psychological assessments, such as the Beck Anxiety Inventory, to gain further insight into emotional patterns.
The first session plays a crucial role in shaping the therapeutic journey. I begin by asking demographic questions, gathering information about the client’s family, support system, interests, and reasons for seeking therapy. It’s also important to explore past experiences—whether they’ve previously visited a psychologist, what aspects of therapy they liked or disliked, and the reasons they may have discontinued. I place great emphasis on the client’s reality, seeking to understand how they experience daily life situations. Additionally, I ask how they found the initial session and whether anything made them feel uncomfortable, as I believe the therapeutic relationship is a critical factor in ensuring successful therapy.
As therapy progresses, various interventions help shape insights and meaningful actions. Recognition & appreciation acknowledge the client’s effort and explore the underlying significance behind behaviors, while comments & reflections share observations and impressions that emerge throughout therapy. Hypothesis formation develops interpretations that may help clients understand recurring patterns, and action-oriented suggestions encourage clients to try something new between sessions to facilitate growth.
Ultimately, therapy is a process of exploration and empowerment, enabling individuals to recognize their own abilities and transform their perspective on life. I deeply value the emotional aspect of therapy, frequently checking in on how clients feel both during and after sessions, as I believe emotional awareness is key to meaningful progress.
