With couples, my approach emphasizes getting to the root cause of the issues -- the root emotions and needs underlying the tension -- and helping to identify and resolve the negative patterns that have perpetuated the struggle. It isn't about blame, but rather, aiding each individual in identifying their role in the pattern, and taking responsibility for changing their own behaviors that contributes to the issues. I treat couples as a team, and aid them in being able to approach their relationship as teammates rather than competitors.
