Life is complicated, finding a therapist shouldn't be. It’s Complicated envisions a future where everyone seeking psychological support can easily and promptly find qualified therapists, counselors and coaches, regardless of language, location, or other barriers. That’s why It’s Complicated is making psychotherapy more accessible by building an international community of therapists united by their diversity. The company's mission is to guide people with a professional, trustworthy and engaging platform for psychological counseling and therapy.

Foundation & Self-Understanding

It’s Complicated was founded in 2019 by therapists Johanne Schwensen and Jakob Lusensky. With It’s Complicated they have created a socially responsible, ethically driven mental health platform with a European footprint. It is tailored to the unique needs of both clients and therapists – and designed to serve individuals as well as organizations.

It’s Complicated is at its core a community of therapists, consciously setting itself apart from large technology companies by offering an independent, community-based alternative, with 10% of the company owned by therapists from across the network. By addressing the challenges therapists face in building their own practices in a constantly evolving environment, It’s Complicated helps to improve the conditions under which they work – and in doing so, enhances the quality of therapy that clients experience, both online and in person.

Leadership

It’s Complicated is led by its two founders Johanne Schwensen (36), Chief Clinical Officer, and Jakob Lusensky (48), CEO – both closely involved in day-to-day operations and also continue to work therapeutically. Jakob brings extensive experience in branding and psychoanalysis as a former Brand Director and now Jungian Psychoanalyst with 12 years of professional experience in this field, while Johanne, a Clinical Psychologist, has over 10 years of expertise in treating issues such as anxiety, ADHD and challenges in parenting. Together with their CTO, Jon Schmidt, former staff engineer at Soundcloud and experience from Google as well as a business data team from companies such as N26, It’s Complicated combines psychotherapeutic expertise with technological know-how from the Berlin start-up ecosystem.

Location

It’s Complicated operates internationally, with its headquarters at Mittelweg 50, a practice for counselling and therapy in Neukölln, Berlin. The team works flexibly and remotely from various locations worldwide. Therapists are located in nearly all major cities across Europe, including Berlin, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Barcelona, Hamburg, and more.

Employees & Expertise

It’s Complicated currently includes over 2,500 carefully vetted therapists, psychologists, counselors and coaches with various specializations such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Somatic Experiencing, EMDR and many more. An experienced IT and support team ensures that the platform operates smoothly, while marketing and communication experts focus on the platform’s growth.

• Therapist-led model: The platform has been developed by professionals and focuses on sustainable, fair structures. Approximately 10% of the platform is community owned, allowing therapists to be directly involved in its development.
