How do I know a therapist really speaks French?

Therapists list their session languages on their profile. We verify every therapist's identity, qualifications and location before they get listed on It's Complicated, but language skills are self-reported. If you want to be sure, just write them a message in French, or use a free intro call where one is offered.

Can therapy work if French isn't the therapist's first language?

Yes. Many therapists work at a professional level in a language they learned later, and some even trained in it. What matters most is the relationship between you and your therapist. Whether to do therapy in your own first language is a separate question, which we explore in our article on language and therapy.

What kind of therapy do French-speaking therapists offer?

Talk therapy, meaning psychotherapy, psychological counselling and coaching, not speech and language therapy. Approaches include cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and systemic and somatic work. Each profile lists the therapist's approaches, so you can filter by method as well as language.

How much does therapy in French cost?

Therapists on It's Complicated set their own rates, most between €40 and €300 per session, and you pay them directly. Prices are shown on every profile before you get in touch. Public healthcare may cover therapy in some countries, but usually after a wait and rarely with a choice of language. Most therapists on It's Complicated work privately, but some offer options for reimbursement, so it's worth asking them directly.

Can I see a French-speaking therapist online?

Yes. Many therapists offer online sessions, so you're not limited to your own city or country. That's especially helpful if you're an expat living abroad, or if only a few local therapists speak French.
