Learn more about avoidant personality disorder
Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is a recognised mental health condition characterised by a pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to criticism or rejection, present from early adulthood and affecting multiple areas of life. Recognised in the DSM-5, AvPD goes beyond shyness or introversion: the fear of humiliation or disapproval is so intense that many people with the condition avoid relationships, social situations, and professional opportunities altogether, even when they genuinely want connection. The condition is closely related to social anxiety, though AvPD is typically more entrenched and affects identity more broadly.
AvPD is characterised by patterns of avoidance and self-perception that have usually been present since adolescence or early adulthood.
Common signs
- Avoiding jobs, social activities, or relationships because of fear of criticism, rejection, or embarrassment
- Reluctance to take risks or try new things because failure would feel unbearable
- Viewing yourself as socially inept, unappealing, or inferior to others
- Extreme sensitivity to what others think, with criticism replaying long after the fact
- Holding back in relationships until certain of being liked or accepted without conditions
- Significant loneliness, alongside a belief that close relationships are not available to you
Other common experiences
- Chronic shame or a deep sense of being fundamentally flawed
- Anxiety in almost any social situation, even with people you know well
- Depression as a result of isolation and unfulfilled relational needs
AvPD responds to therapy, though the patterns involved are ingrained and treatment tends to be longer term than for situational anxiety.
- Schema therapy Schema therapy identifies the early maladaptive schemas, core beliefs formed in childhood, that drive avoidance and self-rejection, and works to change them through a combination of cognitive, experiential, and relational techniques.
- CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) CBT addresses the specific avoidance behaviours and distorted thoughts that maintain the condition, using structured exposure and cognitive restructuring.
- CFT (Compassion-focused therapy) CFT directly targets the shame and intense self-criticism that are central to AvPD, building a more compassionate internal relationship as a foundation for change.
- Psychodynamic therapy Psychodynamic approaches explore the relational origins of avoidance and inadequacy, often tracing how early attachment experiences shaped the expectation of rejection.
