Learn more about self-confidence
Self-confidence is the trust a person has in their own abilities, judgement, and capacity to handle the challenges and situations they encounter. Low self-confidence involves a persistent tendency to doubt or underestimate oneself, often in ways that limit what a person attempts, how they present themselves, and how they respond to setbacks. It is not the same as introversion, modesty, or a realistic assessment of limitations; it is a pattern of self-doubt that goes beyond what the evidence warrants and that significantly affects daily life, relationships, and opportunities. Self-confidence is learnable and responds well to psychological support.
Low self-confidence often goes unaddressed because it can look like being realistic, cautious, or simply not the kind of person who pushes themselves forward.
- You regularly doubt your own abilities, even in areas where you have a track record of competence
- You avoid situations, opportunities, or conversations because of fear of failure, embarrassment, or judgement
- Criticism or negative feedback affects you much more deeply than positive feedback, and stays with you longer
- You find it difficult to assert your needs, express disagreement, or take up appropriate space in relationships or at work
- You compare yourself unfavourably to others frequently, and the comparison rarely goes in your direction
- Your sense of worth feels closely tied to your performance, achievement, or others' approval
- You have a persistent inner critic that comments on what you do, say, or feel in undermining ways
Several approaches are effective for building self-confidence, depending on whether the focus is on surface behaviours, deeper beliefs, or specific life domains.
- CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) CBT identifies the specific thoughts, assumptions, and avoidance behaviours that maintain low confidence, using behavioural experiments and cognitive restructuring to test and change them.
- CFT (Compassion-focused therapy) CFT addresses the harsh inner critic at the root of much low confidence, building a more supportive and compassionate internal relationship as a foundation for change.
- Coaching Coaching supports the development of confidence in specific domains, including work, communication, or leadership, and is particularly useful for people who want practical, goal-oriented support.
- Schema therapy Schema therapy works at the level of core beliefs about inadequacy, conditional worth, or unlovability that underlie chronic low self-confidence, addressing them more fundamentally than symptom-focused approaches alone.
