    Learn more about bulimia

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterised by recurrent cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours intended to prevent weight gain, most commonly self-induced vomiting, laxative or diuretic use, fasting, or excessive exercise. Recognised in the DSM-5, bulimia is driven by intense concerns about body weight and shape and by a persistent sense that eating is out of control. Unlike anorexia, bulimia does not always involve a low body weight, which means it can go undetected for years. The physical and psychological effects are serious and worsen without treatment.

Bulimia is often hidden with considerable effort, making it difficult for others to identify. Many people with bulimia appear to eat normally in social settings.

    Common signs

    • Recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food rapidly, with a sense of loss of control
    • Compensatory behaviours following binge episodes, including vomiting, laxative use, or excessive exercise
    • Intense preoccupation with body weight, shape, and food
    • Eating in secret or disappearing to the bathroom after meals
    • Feeling unable to stop eating during an episode, even when physically uncomfortable
    • Strong guilt, shame, or self-criticism after binge and purge cycles

    Physical signs

    • Dental erosion or swollen jaw from repeated vomiting
    • Fluctuating weight or persistent bloating
    • Fatigue, dizziness, or electrolyte imbalances
Bulimia requires assessment by a qualified clinician who can evaluate both the psychological and physical dimensions of the condition. If you or someone you know is at immediate risk, please contact a crisis line or your nearest emergency service.

Bulimia responds well to structured psychological treatment, particularly approaches that address both the binge-purge cycle and the underlying emotional drivers.
    • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) CBT for bulimia targets the rigid food rules, distorted beliefs about weight, and emotional triggers that maintain the cycle, with a structured approach to disrupting binge and purge patterns.
    • DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) DBT is particularly effective when bingeing serves to manage overwhelming emotions, building skills in distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
    • Family therapy Family therapy involves close family members in recovery and can be especially useful for younger people or when family dynamics are contributing to the condition.
    • Psychodynamic therapy Psychodynamic approaches explore the emotional and relational origins of bulimia, including identity, control, and earlier experiences that may shape the relationship with food and the body.
Choosing an approach isn't something you have to do alone. IC's matching can pair you with a therapist whose approach suits your situation. Get matched.
