Learn more about men's work
Men's work refers to the range of therapeutic and developmental practices that support men in examining the internal patterns, social conditioning, and relational dynamics that shape how they live and relate to others. It draws on psychotherapy, somatic practice, group work, and coaching, with a specific focus on the experiences and pressures that men often carry: emotional restriction, isolation, difficulties with anger or vulnerability, and questions about identity, purpose, and masculinity. Men's work is not a clinical diagnosis; it is an area of focused support for men who want to understand themselves more clearly and live more fully.
Men often arrive at therapy later than they might have, after managing something for longer than was necessary.
- You find it difficult to identify, name, or talk about what you are feeling
- You are dealing with anger that feels hard to control or understand
- You feel isolated, even from people you are close to, or have few relationships in which you can be honest
- Something is not working, in a relationship, at work, in how you feel about yourself, but you are not sure how to approach it
- You have been through something significant, a loss, a breakdown, a crisis, and have not really had space to process it
- You are asking questions about what kind of man you want to be, what you actually value, and how you want to live
- You are aware of patterns in your relationships or behaviour that you keep repeating without fully understanding why
Several approaches work well for men's therapeutic and developmental work, depending on whether the focus is relational, somatic, individual, or group-based.
- Group therapy Group therapy with other men can reduce isolation, challenge unhelpful norms about emotional expression, and provide peer support that individual therapy cannot replicate.
- Coaching Coaching focuses on goals, decisions, and building clarity about direction, and suits men who want practical support alongside or instead of deeper therapeutic exploration.
- Counselling Counselling provides a consistent, private space to speak honestly about what is difficult, with a therapist who will not push a particular direction or agenda.
- Psychodynamic therapy Psychodynamic approaches explore the unconscious patterns, early experiences, and relational dynamics that shape behaviour, which can be particularly valuable for understanding why certain patterns repeat.
- Somatic coaching Somatic coaching attends to the body's role in emotional experience, useful for men who have learnt to disconnect from physical and emotional signals and want to rebuild that connection.
