    Learn more about addictions

Addiction is a condition in which a person compulsively seeks and uses a substance or engages in a behaviour despite harmful consequences and a persistent desire to stop. Recognised across the DSM-5 and ICD-11, addiction involves changes to brain circuitry governing reward, motivation, and impulse control, which is why stopping can be so difficult without support. Addictions are not a sign of weak willpower; they are a recognised health condition that responds to treatment.

Addiction can take many forms, including alcohol, drugs, gambling, and behavioural compulsions. Signs vary by type but a number of patterns tend to appear across them.

    Common signs

    • Spending increasing amounts of time obtaining, using, or recovering from a substance or behaviour
    • Finding that more of a substance or activity is needed to achieve the same effect (tolerance)
    • Experiencing physical or emotional discomfort when trying to stop (withdrawal)
    • Continuing despite clear harm to health, relationships, or work
    • Unsuccessful attempts to cut down or stop
    • Giving up activities that were previously important

    Other common experiences

    • Intense cravings that feel difficult to resist
    • Shame, secrecy, or hiding the extent of use
    • Mood changes, irritability, or anxiety when access is limited
Only a qualified mental health or medical professional can assess whether these experiences meet the criteria for an addiction diagnosis. If substance use is placing you or someone else at immediate risk, please contact a crisis line or your nearest emergency service.

Addiction responds to a range of therapeutic approaches, often in combination. The most effective plans address both the addictive behaviour and the underlying patterns driving it.
    • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) CBT helps you identify the thoughts, triggers, and situations that lead to use, and builds practical skills for managing cravings and high-risk moments.
    • DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) DBT was developed for people who experience intense emotions, which often underlies addictive behaviour. It combines skills in distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and mindfulness.
    • Group therapy Group therapy provides peer support alongside therapeutic input, reducing the isolation that often accompanies addiction and building accountability.
    • Psychodynamic therapy Psychodynamic therapy explores the deeper emotional and relational roots of addictive patterns, particularly useful when addiction is linked to unresolved experiences or attachment difficulties.
Choosing an approach isn't something you have to do alone. IC's matching can pair you with a therapist whose approach suits your situation. Get matched.

    FAQs about addictions

Dependence refers to the body adapting to a substance so that stopping causes withdrawal symptoms. Addiction involves dependence but also includes compulsive use despite harm and loss of control. A person can be physically dependent on a medication without being addicted; addiction always involves a psychological compulsion to continue.

Therapy can help with substance-related addictions, including alcohol, cannabis, opioids, stimulants, and prescription medication, as well as behavioural addictions such as gambling, gaming, and compulsive use of social media or pornography. A therapist experienced in addiction will tailor the approach to the specific pattern and its underlying drivers.

Duration varies depending on the severity of the addiction, how long it has been present, and whether there are co-occurring conditions such as depression or trauma. Many people begin with weekly sessions over several months, with some continuing longer-term work. Progress is reviewed regularly and the plan adjusted as needed.

It's Complicated matches you with therapists who have specific experience in addiction. You complete a short survey describing your situation, and our psychologists use a combination of data and clinical judgement to suggest suitable practitioners for online or in-person sessions. You can also browse the directory and select someone directly. It's Complicated is also free to use.

Therapy works well alongside medical support, such as supervised detox or medication-assisted treatment. Many people benefit from combining individual therapy with group support programmes. A good therapist will coordinate with other professionals where relevant and help you navigate what combination of support is right for your situation.
