Learn more about psychedelic integration therapy
Psychedelic integration therapy is a form of talking therapy that helps people make sense of and integrate experiences with psychedelic substances. It does not involve taking psychedelics during sessions. The therapist provides a structured, confidential space to process what arose during an experience, and to translate insights or difficult material into lasting psychological change.
The field has grown alongside increasing clinical research into psychedelic-assisted therapy. Integration therapy addresses a recognised gap: people who have profound, confusing, or distressing experiences with psychedelics often have nowhere to take them. A trained integration therapist provides that space without judgement and without facilitating further substance use.
In psychedelic integration therapy, the therapist works with the content and emotional residue of the client's experience. Sessions are talking-based and follow established therapeutic principles, often drawing on trauma-informed, somatic, or depth psychological frameworks.
Work may involve:
- Making sense of unusual or overwhelming experiences that do not fit ordinary frameworks
- Processing difficult emotions, memories, or revelations that surfaced during the experience
- Working with insights about the self, relationships, or life direction that emerged
- Identifying what has genuinely shifted and what still needs attention
- Translating the experience into concrete changes in how the client lives, relates, and understands themselves
Psychedelic integration therapy is most relevant for people who have had a significant psychedelic experience and are seeking structured support to process it.
Depression
Depression is one of the most researched applications of psychedelic-assisted therapy, and integration is a key part of that process. For people who have had a psychedelic experience that shifted their relationship to depressive patterns, integration therapy helps consolidate and build on that shift.
Trauma
Psychedelic experiences can surface traumatic material with unusual intensity. Integration therapy provides a safe, structured space to process what emerged, with a practitioner trained in trauma-informed approaches. This work requires careful pacing and a strong therapeutic relationship.
Anxiety
Anxiety is a common area of focus in psychedelic research, and many people report significant shifts in their relationship to anxiety following experiences. Integration therapy helps make sense of those shifts and build on them in a grounded, sustainable way.
Complex PTSD
Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) involves deeply embedded patterns that can be difficult to reach through standard talking approaches. Some people with C-PTSD find that psychedelic experiences open material that had previously been inaccessible. Integration therapy provides the structured support needed to work with that material safely.
