Somatic experiencing and its applications

Somatic Experiencing (SE) therapy emerges as a profound approach in psychotherapy, recognised for its effectiveness in addressing trauma and stress-related disorders. Grounded in the understanding of the body's innate capacity to heal, SE focuses on restoring balance to the nervous system and releasing stored trauma energy. Therapists, trained in somatic experiencing guide individuals through a gentle and experiential process to renegotiate traumatic experiences and build resilience. By reconnecting with bodily sensations and promoting self-regulation, SE empowers individuals to overcome symptoms such as anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, and more.

 

How somatic experiencing works

At the heart of Somatic Experiencing lies the principle of titration, wherein therapists help clients explore sensations related to traumatic experiences in manageable doses. Through mindfulness and gentle inquiry, individuals learn to track bodily sensations and discharge trapped energy associated with trauma. SE incorporates techniques such as pendulation, which involves oscillating between the experience of safety and activation, to facilitate nervous system regulation. Additionally, therapists may employ touch or movement to support the release of somatic tension and promote integration.
