DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of psychotherapy that utilizes a cognitive-behavioral approach and emphasizes the psychosocial aspects of treatment.

The theory behind the approach is that some people are prone to react in a more intense way toward certain emotional situations, primarily those found in close relationships. DBT theory suggests that some people’s arousal levels in such situations can increase far more quickly than the average person’s, and take a significant amount of time to return to baseline arousal levels.

DBT is formed to help people increase their emotional and cognitive regulation by learning about the triggers that lead to reactive states and helping to assess which coping skills to apply in the sequence of events to help avoid undesired reactions.
