Learn more about integrative therapy
Integrative therapy is a therapeutic approach in which the therapist combines techniques and ideas from more than one tradition, rather than following a single fixed model. Instead of applying the same method to every client, an integrative therapist tailors their approach to the individual: drawing on cognitive, emotional, relational, or body-based tools depending on what the person needs.
Most integrative therapists have a primary training, for example in psychodynamic therapy or CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), and bring in elements from other approaches where useful. The defining quality is flexibility guided by clinical judgement, not an absence of method.
In integrative therapy, the first sessions are usually spent understanding who you are, what has brought you to therapy, and what kind of support feels most useful. From there, the therapist shapes the work to fit you rather than asking you to fit a standard structure.
Depending on the therapist and the presenting concern, sessions may draw on:
- Cognitive work: noticing and shifting unhelpful thought patterns
- Relational exploration: looking at how early experiences shape current relationships
- Body awareness: attending to what physical sensations can tell you about your emotional state
- Mindfulness or acceptance-based techniques
- Practical skills and structured tools where a specific problem benefits from them
Because it is flexible by design, integrative therapy is used for a broad range of presentations. The following are among the most common.
Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy, and integrative therapy is well-placed to address it because anxiety has cognitive, emotional, relational, and physical dimensions all at once. The therapist can draw on whichever tools best match the client's experience rather than applying one fixed protocol.
Depression
Depression rarely has a single cause, and it rarely responds to a single kind of intervention. Integrative therapy allows the therapist to work with the thoughts, the withdrawal, the relational patterns, and the bodily experience of depression simultaneously, adjusting emphasis as the work develops.
Personal development
Many people come to integrative therapy not with a clinical diagnosis but with a desire to understand themselves better, make different choices, or grow in a particular area of their life. The flexible, personalised nature of integrative therapy makes it well-suited to this kind of open-ended, growth-focused work.
