Learn more about psychiatry
Psychiatry is a medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and management of mental health conditions. Psychiatrists are qualified medical doctors who have completed specialist training in mental health. They are the only mental health professionals who can prescribe medication in most countries.
Psychiatry differs from psychotherapy and psychology in scope and function. A psychiatrist assesses the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of a mental health condition and may use medication, therapy, or a combination of both as part of a treatment plan. They often work alongside therapists and psychologists as part of a broader care team.
A consultation with a psychiatrist typically begins with a thorough assessment. The psychiatrist gathers a detailed picture of the presenting symptoms, personal and family history, and current circumstances before reaching a formulation or diagnosis.
Following assessment, the psychiatrist may:
- Provide a formal diagnosis for a mental health condition
- Prescribe and monitor medication, adjusting dosage and type based on response
- Recommend a course of therapy, either delivered by themselves or by another practitioner
- Coordinate care with a GP, therapist, or specialist team
- Conduct or arrange further investigations where a physical cause needs to be ruled out
Psychiatry covers the full range of mental health conditions. The following are among the most common reasons people seek a psychiatric consultation.
Depression
Depression is one of the most common reasons for a psychiatric referral. A psychiatrist can assess severity, rule out contributing physical factors, and prescribe antidepressant medication where appropriate, alongside or instead of psychological therapy.
Bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder requires careful psychiatric management, including mood stabilising medication, monitoring of episodes, and coordination of care across different phases. Psychiatry is central to the treatment of bipolar disorder, with therapy playing a complementary role.
ADHD: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) assessment and diagnosis often involves a psychiatrist, particularly when medication is being considered. Stimulant and non-stimulant medications for ADHD require a prescription, which only a psychiatrist or other qualified medical doctor can provide.
Dementia
Dementia assessment and management falls within psychiatric and neurological medicine. Psychiatrists specialising in older adults assess cognitive function, provide diagnosis, manage behavioural and psychological symptoms, and coordinate the broader care plan alongside medical and social services.
