Learn more about systemic coaching
Systemic coaching is a coaching approach that works with the individual in the context of their roles, relationships, and the systems they operate within. Rather than focusing solely on personal skills or goals, a systemic coach pays attention to the wider picture: the team, the organisation, the family, the culture, and how those systems shape and are shaped by the person's behaviour.
Systemic coaching is not a clinical service. It does not treat mental health conditions. It applies systemic thinking within a professional development and organisational effectiveness frame, helping people navigate complexity, lead more effectively, and understand the relational dynamics that affect their work.
In systemic coaching, the coach helps the client step back from their individual perspective and see the larger patterns at play. This systemic view often reveals why certain problems persist despite individual effort, and where points of leverage might exist.
Sessions may involve:
- Mapping the key relationships and dynamics in the client's professional or personal system
- Exploring the roles, expectations, and implicit rules that shape how the system operates
- Identifying circular patterns: how the client's behaviour influences others and vice versa
- Working with the perspectives of absent stakeholders: what might others in the system need or see differently?
- Finding where a small shift in approach, communication, or role might create wider change
Systemic coaching is most effective for concerns rooted in relational and organisational complexity.
Work & career
Work and career challenges are the primary focus of systemic coaching. Whether someone is navigating team conflict, a difficult organisational culture, a leadership transition, or a career decision with multiple stakeholders, systemic coaching provides a framework for seeing and acting on the full picture.
Relationships
Professional relationships, including those with managers, colleagues, and teams, are shaped by systemic dynamics that are often invisible to the people involved. Systemic coaching helps clients understand these dynamics and develop more effective and satisfying ways of relating in their work context.
Stress
Professional stress frequently has systemic roots: unclear roles, conflicting demands, power dynamics, and organisational culture. Systemic coaching helps clients understand where their stress is coming from and what, within the system, might be shifted to create more sustainable conditions.
Communication issues
Communication difficulties in professional settings are rarely just about the individuals involved. They reflect the patterns and structures of the system itself. Systemic coaching helps clients understand those patterns and develop communication approaches that work within and on the system rather than just between individuals.
