Learn more about breathwork
Breathwork is a therapeutic approach that uses intentional breathing techniques to influence the autonomic nervous system, emotional regulation, and psychological wellbeing. By consciously altering the pace, depth, and pattern of breathing, breathwork can shift the body's physiological state in ways that affect mood, stress levels, and the capacity to process difficult experiences.
Breathwork encompasses a broad range of practices, from clinically developed techniques used in anxiety and trauma treatment to more contemplative or intensive approaches used in therapeutic and wellness contexts. It is used both as a standalone practice and as a complement to other therapeutic modalities.
Breathwork operates through the body's respiratory system, which is one of the few autonomic functions that can be consciously controlled. By changing breathing patterns, practitioners can directly influence the nervous system's balance between activation and rest.
In a guided breathwork session, a practitioner may:
- Guide slow, diaphragmatic breathing to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the body's rest-and-digest state)
- Use rhythmic breathing patterns to help process and release stored stress or tension
- Introduce specific techniques suited to the client's presenting concerns
- Support verbal reflection on what arises during or after the breathing practice
Breathwork is particularly well-suited to presentations where nervous system dysregulation is a central feature.
Anxiety
Breathwork is widely used for anxiety, providing a direct tool for interrupting the physiological stress response. Slow, controlled breathing can reduce heart rate and the physical symptoms associated with anxious arousal, making it useful both in-session and as a self-regulation skill.
Panic attacks
Breathing dysregulation is a core component of panic attacks. Breathwork techniques help clients recognise and interrupt the hyperventilation cycle that intensifies panic. This is typically taught within a broader clinical framework addressing the underlying anxiety.
Stress
Regular breathwork practice has been used to lower baseline stress levels and improve resilience to daily pressures. It is a practical, accessible tool that many people integrate into their self-care alongside therapy.
Insomnia
Breathwork is used to support sleep onset and improve sleep quality by activating the parasympathetic nervous system before bed. It is often combined with other approaches such as mindfulness or sleep-focused cognitive work.
