Learn more about TFT: Thought field therapy
Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is a body-based therapeutic approach that involves tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while mentally focusing on a distressing thought, memory, or situation. The aim is to reduce the emotional intensity of the distressing material by working directly with the body's physiological response.
TFT is the original tapping approach, from which the better-known EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) was later developed. TFT uses specific tapping sequences that vary depending on the presenting concern, rather than a single standardised sequence. Its evidence base is developing but more limited than approaches such as CBT or EMDR. Practitioners typically use it as part of a broader therapeutic plan rather than as a standalone primary treatment.
In a TFT session, the practitioner identifies the specific distressing thought, memory, or fear the client wants to address and selects the corresponding tapping sequence. The client rates the intensity of their distress before and after each round.
A session typically involves:
- Identifying and rating the emotional charge of the target thought or memory
- Guided tapping on a specific sequence of acupressure points, chosen for the presenting concern
- Tracking shifts in physical sensation and emotional intensity across rounds
- Addressing any psychological reversal, a state in which progress is blocked, through a specific corrective technique
- Verbal reflection on what shifted and what remains
TFT is most commonly applied to presentations involving specific emotional charges, fear responses, and stress reactions.
Anxiety
Anxiety is the most established application of tapping-based approaches including TFT. By pairing focused attention on anxious thoughts with somatic stimulation, TFT may reduce the physiological arousal associated with anxiety, including for specific situational fears and more generalised anxious states.
Panic attacks
TFT is used to help reduce the intensity of panic responses and to interrupt the cycle of anticipatory anxiety around panic. Clients may also learn self-administered sequences to use when a panic response begins. This is typically used alongside broader clinical support for panic disorder.
Trauma
For specific trauma-related memories or fear responses, TFT offers a technique for reducing emotional intensity in a titrated way. As with all trauma-focused approaches, careful pacing and a well-established therapeutic relationship are essential.
Stress
TFT is used as a practical self-regulation tool for managing stress responses linked to specific situations or recurring pressures. Many people find it a useful addition to their coping toolkit alongside other therapeutic or lifestyle approaches.
