Learn more about existential analysis
Existential analysis is a philosophical and psychotherapeutic approach that explores questions of meaning, freedom, responsibility, and existence as the foundation of psychological wellbeing. Rather than focusing primarily on symptoms or behavioural patterns, existential analysis helps people examine how they relate to the fundamental conditions of their lives: mortality, freedom, isolation, and the search for meaning.
Developed in the European tradition by Viktor Frankl and later extended by Austrian psychotherapist Alfried Längle, existential analysis draws on existential philosophy and phenomenology. It is a recognised psychotherapeutic approach practised across Europe and internationally, with its own training institutes and professional associations.
In existential analysis, the therapist works with the client to explore their lived experience: how they relate to their own existence, what they find meaningful, where they feel constrained or unfree, and what conditions support a life that feels genuinely their own.
Sessions may involve:
- Exploring the client's relationship to meaning, values, and personal responsibility
- Working with existential themes such as loss, impermanence, identity, and freedom
- Examining how unexamined assumptions or unexpressed emotions limit the client's sense of aliveness
- Developing a more authentic and personally grounded way of engaging with life
Existential analysis is most effective where questions of meaning, loss, and identity are at the centre of the person's difficulty.
Grief & loss
Grief is one of the most natural entry points for existential work. Confronting loss raises fundamental questions about meaning, identity, and how to continue. Existential analysis provides a framework for sitting with these questions rather than moving past them too quickly.
Cancer support
A cancer diagnosis forces a direct encounter with mortality and uncertainty. Existential analysis is used in oncology support settings to help people find meaning and agency within a situation they cannot control, and to process the existential dimensions of illness alongside medical care.
Climate anxiety
Climate anxiety often involves not just fear but a deeper confrontation with helplessness, moral responsibility, and uncertainty about the future. Existential analysis offers tools for engaging with these questions without either dismissing them or being overwhelmed by them.
Spiritual crisis
A spiritual crisis, whether triggered by loss of faith, a profound disorientation of meaning, or an overwhelming spiritual experience, is well-suited to existential analysis. The approach takes questions of meaning and transcendence seriously without requiring a specific religious or philosophical framework.
