Learn more about humanistic psychology
Humanistic psychology is a psychological tradition that emphasises human potential, subjective experience, personal agency, and the capacity for growth. It emerged in the mid-20th century as an alternative to both behaviourism and psychoanalysis, placing the person's own experience and values at the centre of the therapeutic enterprise rather than diagnosis, symptom reduction, or unconscious determinism.
Key figures in humanistic psychology include Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, and Rollo May. In therapeutic practice, the tradition underpins person-centred therapy, Gestalt therapy, existential therapy, and logotherapy, among others. Humanistic psychology is internationally recognised and forms the basis of one of the major streams of contemporary psychotherapy.
In therapy informed by humanistic psychology, the relationship between client and therapist is considered the primary vehicle for change. The therapist offers unconditional positive regard, empathy, and authenticity, creating conditions in which the client can explore their experience honestly and move toward greater self-understanding.
Work within this tradition may involve:
- Exploring the client's own values, goals, and sense of self without imposing a framework
- Attending closely to feelings and subjective experience as they arise in the session
- Developing greater self-awareness and a more compassionate relationship with oneself
- Working with the quality of the therapeutic relationship as material in itself
- Supporting the client's capacity for choice and self-direction
Humanistic psychology-based therapy is broad in scope and suits a wide range of presentations. It is particularly effective where the quality of self-relationship and the therapeutic connection are the central levers for change.
Anxiety
Anxiety in a humanistic frame is often understood as a disconnection from one's own experience or a difficulty being present with uncertainty. Rather than primarily targeting symptoms, humanistic therapy works with the underlying conditions: self-acceptance, the capacity to tolerate difficult feeling, and a more grounded sense of self.
Grief & loss
Humanistic therapy provides a relational space to grieve without pressure to move toward resolution on a particular timeline. The emphasis on the client's own experience and the quality of the therapeutic presence makes it well-suited to the kind of open-ended processing that grief often requires.
Personal development
Many people come to humanistic therapy not with a clinical presenting problem but wanting to understand themselves better, make more intentional choices, or develop a stronger sense of identity. This kind of growth-oriented work is squarely within the tradition's scope.
Self-confidence
Low self-confidence often reflects a critical or conditional relationship with oneself. Humanistic therapy works directly with this, supporting the development of self-acceptance and a more grounded internal sense of worth that does not depend on external validation.
