    Learn more about existential analysis

Existential analysis is a philosophical and psychotherapeutic approach that explores questions of meaning, freedom, responsibility, and existence as the foundation of psychological wellbeing. Rather than focusing primarily on symptoms or behavioural patterns, existential analysis helps people examine how they relate to the fundamental conditions of their lives: mortality, freedom, isolation, and the search for meaning. Developed in the European tradition by Viktor Frankl and later extended by Austrian psychotherapist Alfried Längle, existential analysis draws on existential philosophy and phenomenology. It is a recognised psychotherapeutic approach practised across Europe and internationally, with its own training institutes and professional associations.

In existential analysis, the therapist works with the client to explore their lived experience: how they relate to their own existence, what they find meaningful, where they feel constrained or unfree, and what conditions support a life that feels genuinely their own. Sessions may involve:
    • Exploring the client's relationship to meaning, values, and personal responsibility
    • Working with existential themes such as loss, impermanence, identity, and freedom
    • Examining how unexamined assumptions or unexpressed emotions limit the client's sense of aliveness
    • Developing a more authentic and personally grounded way of engaging with life
Existential analysis is a talking approach grounded in dialogue and phenomenological inquiry: attending closely to the client's actual experience rather than interpreting it through a fixed theoretical lens. It is often longer-term and exploratory in nature. This approach is particularly suited to people navigating major life transitions, confronting loss or mortality, or experiencing a crisis of meaning. It is not a protocol-based treatment for acute clinical symptoms, though it is used alongside other approaches in complex cases.

Existential analysis is most effective where questions of meaning, loss, and identity are at the centre of the person's difficulty. Grief & loss Grief is one of the most natural entry points for existential work. Confronting loss raises fundamental questions about meaning, identity, and how to continue. Existential analysis provides a framework for sitting with these questions rather than moving past them too quickly. Cancer support A cancer diagnosis forces a direct encounter with mortality and uncertainty. Existential analysis is used in oncology support settings to help people find meaning and agency within a situation they cannot control, and to process the existential dimensions of illness alongside medical care. Climate anxiety Climate anxiety often involves not just fear but a deeper confrontation with helplessness, moral responsibility, and uncertainty about the future. Existential analysis offers tools for engaging with these questions without either dismissing them or being overwhelmed by them. Spiritual crisis A spiritual crisis, whether triggered by loss of faith, a profound disorientation of meaning, or an overwhelming spiritual experience, is well-suited to existential analysis. The approach takes questions of meaning and transcendence seriously without requiring a specific religious or philosophical framework. Choosing an approach isn't something you have to do alone. IC's matching can pair you with a therapist whose approach suits your situation. Get matched

It's Complicated is a therapist-founded mental health platform connecting clients with verified practitioners across Europe and globally, in over 60 languages. We work with over 2,500 vetted therapists, with in-person availability in Berlin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, Vienna, and other major cities, alongside online sessions worldwide. It's Complicated is free to use, and you pay your chosen therapist directly at rates they set. Finding a therapist trained specifically in existential analysis, rather than in existential or humanistic approaches more broadly, requires knowing the distinction. Our matching service is built to remove that friction. You complete a short survey, our psychologists combine data-driven insights with human judgement to identify the right therapists for your situation, and you choose from a shortlist of strong candidates. You can also browse our directory directly if you'd prefer to choose yourself. Get matched with an existential analysis therapist, or browse all existential analysis therapists in the directory.

    FAQs about existential analysis

Existential analysis is a psychotherapeutic approach grounded in existential philosophy that explores questions of meaning, freedom, responsibility, and mortality as the foundation of psychological wellbeing. Developed in the European tradition by Viktor Frankl and Alfried Längle, it helps people examine how they relate to their own existence rather than focusing primarily on symptoms or behavioural patterns.

Existential analysis is used for grief, life transitions, spiritual crisis, burnout, depression, and anxiety where questions of meaning and identity are central. It is particularly well-suited to people confronting mortality, loss of purpose, or a deep sense of emptiness that does not resolve through more symptom-focused approaches.

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but existential analysis refers specifically to the approach developed within the Austrian tradition by Alfried Längle, building on Viktor Frankl's logotherapy. Existential therapy is a broader term covering various approaches rooted in existential philosophy, including the British and American traditions. Both share a focus on meaning, freedom, and authentic existence.

It's Complicated matches clients with verified existential analysis practitioners. You complete a short survey about your situation and what you're looking for, and a psychologist identifies a shortlist of suitable therapists. You choose from that shortlist and book directly. Online and in-person sessions are available, and It's Complicated is also free to use.

Yes. Existential analysis does not require any prior knowledge of philosophy. The therapist translates the underlying concepts into accessible, practical dialogue. What it does require is a willingness to reflect on questions that go beyond symptom relief: what matters to you, how you want to live, and what gives your life a sense of direction and meaning.
