Learn more about person-centred approach
The person-centred approach is a therapeutic model built on a simple but important idea: people are capable of understanding themselves and growing, given the right conditions. The therapist's role is to create those conditions, not to direct, advise, or interpret.
The three core conditions are unconditional positive regard (accepting the client without judgement), empathy (understanding the client's experience from the inside), and congruence (the therapist being genuine rather than playing a role). Research consistently shows these qualities are among the strongest predictors of therapeutic outcome, across all approaches.
In the person-centred approach, the therapist follows the client's lead. There is no fixed agenda, no homework, and no technique applied to a predefined problem. The therapist listens closely, reflects back what they hear, and creates a space in which the client feels safe enough to explore what they have not been able to explore elsewhere.
Sessions may involve:
- Talking freely about whatever feels most pressing, without being redirected
- Feeling genuinely heard and understood, often for the first time in some relationships
- Exploring feelings and experiences at the client's own pace
- Gradually developing greater self-awareness and self-acceptance
- Making sense of difficult situations, transitions, or relationships
The person-centred approach is broad and flexible. It is particularly well-suited to presentations where the quality of the relational experience is central to what is needed.
Divorce & break up
Divorce and separation involve loss, identity disruption, and often a profound need to be heard without being told what to do or how to feel. The non-directive, accepting quality of the person-centred approach makes it well-suited to this kind of emotionally complex transition.
Adjustment disorders
Adjustment disorders involve difficulty coping with a specific life change or stressor. The person-centred approach provides space to process what has happened, make sense of the emotional response, and find a way forward at the client's own pace.
Expat life
Expats often face identity questions, loneliness, and a lack of the social and relational support that would normally sustain them. The person-centred approach offers consistent, non-judgemental presence that can be particularly valuable when established support networks are absent.
Cancer support
A cancer diagnosis raises profound emotional and existential questions. The person-centred approach provides a space where those questions can be held without pressure to resolve them. The unconditional acceptance at the core of the model is particularly important for people navigating fear, grief, and uncertainty.
