Learn more about positive psychotherapy
Positive psychotherapy is a structured therapeutic approach that works with both a person's difficulties and their existing strengths, resources, and capacities. It does not minimise problems but addresses them alongside a genuine focus on what is functioning well and what matters to the client.
Positive psychotherapy is a specific clinical model, distinct from the broader research field of positive psychology. It is used for depression, anxiety, personal development, and other clinical and non-clinical presentations. Practitioners are trained in a defined framework with specific stages and techniques, grounded in a view of the whole person rather than the symptom alone.
In positive psychotherapy, the therapist works with the client across a structured process that moves between understanding the difficulty and developing the client's resources. Neither dimension is treated as more important than the other.
Sessions may involve:
- Exploring the presenting difficulty in its full context: not just what is wrong, but what it means and what it is connected to
- Identifying existing strengths, values, and areas of life that are functioning well
- Working with the client's cultural and relational context as meaningful parts of their experience
- Developing practical capacities in four areas: work and achievement, relationships, body and health, and meaning and spirituality
- Building a more balanced and sustainable sense of self that includes both difficulty and strength
Positive psychotherapy is suited to a range of clinical and growth-oriented presentations. The following are among the most common.
Depression
Depression is one of the primary clinical applications of positive psychotherapy. Working with strengths and resources alongside the depressive experience provides a more complete picture of the person and can support recovery in ways that exclusively problem-focused approaches sometimes miss.
Personal development
Positive psychotherapy's focus on the whole person, including values, relationships, and meaning, makes it naturally suited to personal development work. It helps people understand themselves more fully and develop in the areas that matter most to them.
Self-confidence
Low self-confidence often involves a narrow and critical view of oneself. Positive psychotherapy works to broaden that view, helping clients recognise and build on existing strengths rather than focusing exclusively on what is lacking.
Work & career
Work-related stress, burnout, and dissatisfaction are well-suited to positive psychotherapy's balanced framework. It helps clients examine what is driving their difficulty while also identifying what gives their work meaning and what resources they already have available.
