    Looking beyond Belgrade?

If you're looking for a therapist who practises in another city or country rather than in Belgrade, head over to our global directory. You'll find therapists from 60+ countries, working in person and online.

    Therapy in Belgrade

Most people in Belgrade arrange and pay for therapy privately. Serbia's public health system covers psychiatry as a medical specialty, but psychotherapy is not a service the national insurer pays for. The word doesn't appear in the health insurance law, and talking therapy isn't on the list of services a primary care centre can bill. What the public system reliably provides is psychiatric assessment and medication. Talking therapy sits outside it. The public route starts at a community health centre (dom zdravlja) with your assigned doctor (izabrani lekar), who issues a referral (uput) for specialist care. You'll also need a validated health card. Without either, you can still be seen and simply pay for the consultation. Private practice needs no referral. On It's Complicated you choose the therapist and arrange it with them directly, and since there's nothing to claim back afterwards, the rate on the profile is what you pay. Psychologist (psiholog) is defined by a law dating from 1996: it requires a psychology degree and a professional examination. Psychotherapist (psihoterapeut) isn't a protected title. There's no law governing psychotherapy in Serbia and no professional chamber for it, so in principle anyone may use the word. Psychotherapy training in Serbia runs through institutes accredited by European professional bodies rather than through universities, so the standards that apply are set outside the country. The Association of Psychotherapy Societies of Serbia (Savez društava psihoterapeuta Srbije) issues a national certificate and the European Certificate for Psychotherapy, both requiring several years of training, extensive personal therapy and supervised practice. Neither is a legal requirement and the association binds only its own members, but it's the clearest signal of completed training you'll find on a Belgrade profile. A psychiatrist (psihijatar) is separate again: a medical doctor, licensed by the medical chamber, and the only one of the three the law regulates fully.

Therapists listed on It's Complicated in Belgrade work in English and Serbian, and a substantial number also work in Russian, so if Russian is your first language you can work in it here. You can filter the Belgrade list by language before anything else. Research on which language to have therapy in goes both ways. Your first language gives more direct access to painful memories and brings your cultural references with it, while a second language creates distance that tends to make people more analytical. Either way, the relationship with your therapist matters more than the language it happens in. A good number of the therapists in Belgrade on It's Complicated work with expat life. Therapists here are used to clients who arrived recently, aren't certain how long they're staying, or are holding a life together across two countries.

    Online or in person

Most therapists listed in Belgrade offer face-to-face appointments alongside online sessions, so both are easy to arrange here. Meeting in person suits people who want a clear separation between therapy and home. Online removes the question of neighbourhood and commute, which gives you more choice if you're looking for a particular language, approach or specialisation, and it means sessions can carry on if you move or travel. Because private therapy in Serbia is arranged directly between you and the therapist, nothing about the funding limits how you meet. You and your therapist decide, and many charge the same either way. You can also browse therapists offering online sessions across It's Complicated.

Therapists in Belgrade on It's Complicated most commonly work with:
    • Anxiety: generalised worry, panic attacks, and the physical experiences that come with both.
    • Relationships and couples therapy: recurring conflict, communication difficulties, separation and divorce.
    • Expat life: isolation, identity, and the practical and emotional adjustment of living away from where you are from.
    • Trauma: single events, and difficulties that go back a long way.
    • Depression: persistent low mood, loss of interest, and the longer-term effects of both.
    • Burnout: exhaustion connected to work, and difficulty recovering from it.
Gestalt therapy is the most commonly listed approach in Belgrade. The city has hosted a continuously accredited Gestalt training institute since 1990, one of the longest-running in the region, and four of the national psychotherapy association's member bodies are Gestalt organisations. Gestalt works in the present tense, with attention to what is happening in the room and in the body rather than only to the account you give of your week. If that isn't what you want, other approaches are available here too, and most therapists will talk it through in a first session. If you are in crisis or at risk of harm, contact your local emergency number, or see our emergency resources.

It's Complicated is a therapist-founded mental health platform connecting clients with independent therapists across Europe and globally, in over 60 languages. Every therapist listed is verified, sets their own rates, and is paid directly by you. The platform is free to use, and there are no waiting lists. In Serbia the title psychotherapist carries no legal protection. On It's Complicated anyone using it is checked rigorously against our own training requirements before they appear. You can read the profiles, rates and languages yourself, or get matched with a therapist in Belgrade and our psychologists will recommend therapists who fit your situation.

    Therapy in Belgrade: common questions

It largely does not. Serbia's national health insurance covers psychiatry as a medical specialty, but psychotherapy is not named in the health insurance law and is not a service a primary care centre can bill for. In practice the public system provides psychiatric assessment and medication, and talking therapy is arranged privately.

Privately, as soon as a therapist has availability, since you arrange it with them directly and no referral is involved. Through the public system you begin at a community health centre, where your assigned doctor issues a referral for specialist care. That referral is valid for six months from your first appointment with the specialist, not from the date it was issued. Without a referral or a validated health card you can still be seen if you pay for the consultation.

Therapists set their own rates and are paid directly, so prices vary between therapists and are listed on each profile. Rates in Belgrade are usually quoted in dinars, and some therapists offer reduced places for students or people in financial difficulty. There is no reimbursement to claim afterwards, so the fee on the profile is what you pay.

Therapists listed in Belgrade work in English and Serbian, and a substantial number also work in Russian, so you can filter by language alongside format and specialisation. It is worth reading the credentials as well as the title, because psychotherapist is not a protected title in Serbia, and a national or European certificate for psychotherapy is the clearest sign of completed training. If you would rather not choose alone, you fill in a short survey and our psychologists suggest therapists suited to your situation.

Belgrade has an unusually long Gestalt tradition. A Gestalt training institute has run in the city continuously since 1990, it has been accredited by the European Association for Gestalt Therapy since 2008, and four of the member organisations of the national psychotherapy association are Gestalt bodies. It is the most commonly listed approach here, which is why it comes up so often when people search for therapy in the city.
