Family therapy refers to the type of psychological counselling that focuses on the issues specific to a family’s mental health and functioning.
Family therapy can help family members through major transitions, difficult periods, conflicts between family members, and physical or mental health problems in family members. The main assumption of family therapy is that the problem of an individual can’t be properly addressed without understanding it in the group (family) context. Family therapy focuses on improving communication, which in turn can build stronger relationships. Family therapy is usually short-term and solution-focused. It is not required that all family members attend the therapy. Also “family” does not necessarily mean people living in the same household or blood relatives, it can mean anyone who plays a significant supporting life-long role in someone’s life.
