    Learn more about person-centred approach

The person-centred approach is a therapeutic model built on a simple but important idea: people are capable of understanding themselves and growing, given the right conditions. The therapist's role is to create those conditions, not to direct, advise, or interpret. The three core conditions are unconditional positive regard (accepting the client without judgement), empathy (understanding the client's experience from the inside), and congruence (the therapist being genuine rather than playing a role). Research consistently shows these qualities are among the strongest predictors of therapeutic outcome, across all approaches.

In the person-centred approach, the therapist follows the client's lead. There is no fixed agenda, no homework, and no technique applied to a predefined problem. The therapist listens closely, reflects back what they hear, and creates a space in which the client feels safe enough to explore what they have not been able to explore elsewhere. Sessions may involve:
    • Talking freely about whatever feels most pressing, without being redirected
    • Feeling genuinely heard and understood, often for the first time in some relationships
    • Exploring feelings and experiences at the client's own pace
    • Gradually developing greater self-awareness and self-acceptance
    • Making sense of difficult situations, transitions, or relationships
The therapeutic relationship is the primary tool. Person-centred therapists do not stand apart as experts who analyse the client. They are present as a genuine human being, and that quality of presence is what makes the work possible. This approach suits people who want to feel understood rather than fixed, and those who have found more directive approaches unhelpful or uncomfortable. It is not protocol-based and works best when the client is willing to engage openly over time.

The person-centred approach is broad and flexible. It is particularly well-suited to presentations where the quality of the relational experience is central to what is needed. Divorce & break up Divorce and separation involve loss, identity disruption, and often a profound need to be heard without being told what to do or how to feel. The non-directive, accepting quality of the person-centred approach makes it well-suited to this kind of emotionally complex transition. Adjustment disorders Adjustment disorders involve difficulty coping with a specific life change or stressor. The person-centred approach provides space to process what has happened, make sense of the emotional response, and find a way forward at the client's own pace. Expat life Expats often face identity questions, loneliness, and a lack of the social and relational support that would normally sustain them. The person-centred approach offers consistent, non-judgemental presence that can be particularly valuable when established support networks are absent. Cancer support A cancer diagnosis raises profound emotional and existential questions. The person-centred approach provides a space where those questions can be held without pressure to resolve them. The unconditional acceptance at the core of the model is particularly important for people navigating fear, grief, and uncertainty. Choosing an approach isn't something you have to do alone. IC's matching can pair you with a therapist whose approach suits your situation. Get matched

It's Complicated is a therapist-founded mental health platform connecting clients with verified practitioners in over 60 languages. We work with over 2,500 vetted therapists, with in-person availability in Berlin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, Vienna, and other major cities, alongside online sessions across the globe. Finding a person-centred therapist whose warmth and relational style genuinely fit what you need, rather than simply having the right label, is easier with targeted matching. Our matching service is built to remove that friction. You complete a short survey, our psychologists combine data-driven insights with human judgement to identify the right therapists for your situation, and you choose from a shortlist of strong candidates. You can also browse our directory directly if you'd prefer to choose yourself. Get matched with a person-centred therapist, or browse all person-centred therapists in the directory.

    FAQs about person-centred approach

The person-centred approach is a therapeutic model based on the belief that people have an innate capacity for growth and self-understanding, given the right conditions. The therapist provides those conditions: unconditional acceptance, empathy, and genuine presence. Rather than directing the client or working to a fixed protocol, the therapist follows the client's lead throughout.

The person-centred approach is used for a wide range of concerns including adjustment to life changes, grief, relationship difficulties, identity questions, and mild to moderate anxiety or depression. It is particularly suited to people who want to feel genuinely heard and understood, and to those who have felt judged or misunderstood in other helping relationships.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is structured and goal-directed, with specific techniques applied to specific problems. The person-centred approach is non-directive: the therapist does not set an agenda or prescribe techniques. The relationship itself is the primary vehicle for change. The two approaches suit different people and different presenting concerns, and many integrative therapists draw on both.

It's Complicated matches clients with verified person-centred therapists across Europe. You complete a short survey about your situation and what you're looking for, and a psychologist identifies a shortlist of suitable practitioners. You choose from that shortlist and book directly. Online and in-person sessions are available across multiple languages.

Person-centred therapy can be short-term, focused on a specific concern, or open-ended and longer-term. Because it follows the client's pace rather than a fixed structure, the duration is determined by what the client needs and wants. Many people find value in both brief and extended engagements. Your therapist will discuss realistic expectations in an initial session.
